Warehouse Distribution Systems
Using
SQL Server

Designing warehouse distribution systems with SQL server , or any database backend , is
pretty straight forward. Basically a warehouse system does only 3 things ..

  Receive in goods

Store goods ( whether its for a few milliseconds or many years !)

  Ship goods

Buts that's very general and I wish it was that simple but , if you wanted to expand
upon it a little you could break it down further , into upper level modules if you will ..

Receive Stock Module ( For receiving stock into warehouse )

Storage Locations Module (For creating / modifying storage locations)

Data interface Module ( For interfacing with ERP/ Customer data system's )

Pick request module ( For processing / interfacing pick order scanning )

Packing module ( Packaging shipped product to your customers )

    E.D.I. ( Electronic Document Interchange) Module ( E.D.I. Interface)

Stock Adjustment Module ( Stock will get lost / stolen / misplaced ! )

Returns ( Dealing with the dreaded customer returns ! )

Interfacing RF Scanning ( Interfacing Rf scanners .. workers are mobile ! )

Stock transfer module ( Transfering stock between locations , with history)

Barcode printing and scanning ( All your locations and stock should be bar-coded !)

Carton creation module ( For internal and shipping cartons )

Reports Modules ( Screen , printed , and web based reporting )

The most important thing's in designing a warehouse system is ..
Allow for growth , both in capacity and most of all functionality
as the users will demand new functions to be added, and you
don't want to redesign the warehouse system from scratch when
                that happens !.
